History

Schmitz Press was founded in 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland, by E. John Schmitz, grandfather of the current company president, Paul B. Schmitz. Incorporated in 1948, the company has been continuously owned and operated by the Schmitz family.

Through its first four decades, Schmitz Press offered primarily one- and two-color letterpress printing to a small client base in metropolitan Baltimore. However, in the late 1970's and early 80's, responding to an increasing demand for multi-color printing and the availability of greatly improved printing technologies, the company began its focus on high quality multi-color offset lithography.

As a result of those efforts, the company experienced exceptional growth from 1978 to 1988. It was also during this period that Schmitz began to establish its reputation as one of Maryland's premier quality commercial printing companies. In 1989, the company moved to its current headquarters, a newly-constructed 35,000 sq. ft. facility in Loveton Center, near Hunt Valley, Maryland. A building expansion completed in 2001 provided 10,000 square feet of additional manufacturing space.

Schmitz Press has won more awards for print quality from the Printing Industries of Maryland than any other member company, including five "Grand Q" (Best of Show) Awards (1988, 1989, 1990, 1994, and 1999). On the national and international level, Schmitz has been especially recognized for its annual report printing. Schmitz has won numerous AR100 awards, including honors for one of the "Top 10 Printed" reports in the show. Annual reports printed by Schmitz Press have also been honored in the prestigious Mead Annual Report Show, the Donside International Design and Print Show in London, England, and the Sappi "Printer of the Year". In 1997, Schmitz received the highest honor of the Printing Industries of America, the "Benny" Award, in two different categories -- annual reports and magazines. It was one of only seven printers in the United States to win more than one Benny. The company won multiple Bennys again in 1999, in the annual reports and programs categories. In 2002, Schmitz Press was chosen as a Sappi North American Printer of the Year Gold Award winner, one of only six companies in North America to be so honored.
